LATEST HAPPENINGS IN AI
The Mac vs. PC war is back
Qualcomm’s exclusivity agreement with Microsoft to provide CPUs for Windows on Arm PCs has been rumored to expire in 2024. Arm CEO Rene Haas is the first person to confirm it officially. The end of the exclusivity agreement means Windows on Arm PCs can start to use non-Qualcomm Arm chips in the coming years.
Opening Doors for Other Manufacturers
The end of Qualcomm’s exclusivity will mean other companies can make Arm CPUs for laptops. If Reuters is correct, those CPUs will be coming from AMD and Nvidia. AMD has said it’s ready to make ARM CPUs if needed, while Nvidia has experience in Arm with its Grace server CPUs.
Microsoft’s Project Volterra
Microsoft’s ‘Project Volterra’, a device aimed at developers interested in building, testing and running native Windows on Arm apps, is shipping as of today. Microsoft is counting on the new $599 device to attract more developers to build native Windows on Arm apps, especially AI apps which take advantage of the built-in neural-processing unit in the Qualcomm platform.
The Mac vs. PC War
Microsoft is getting ready to launch a new wave of Windows on Arm devices. It’s confident these laptops will beat the MacBook Air. This might be about to witness Microsoft’s M1 moment.
Google’s AI Advancements: A Challenge to OpenAI?
Google has had an eventful year, rebranding its AI chatbot from Bard to Gemini and releasing several new AI models. At the Google I/O developer conference, the company made several announcements regarding AI and how it’ll be embedded across the company’s various apps and services.
Gemini 1.5 Flash and Gemini 1.5 Pro
The new large language model (LLM), Gemini 1.5 Flash, is the fastest Gemini model served in the API and a more cost-efficient alternative than Gemini 1.5 Pro1. Gemini 1.5 Pro, launched in February, has been upgraded to provide better-quality responses in many different areas, including translation, reasoning, coding, and more.
Gemini Advanced and Gemini Nano
Gemini 1.5 Pro, with its 1 million context window, will be available for consumers in Gemini Advanced. This will allow consumers to get AI assistance on large bodies of work, such as PDFs that are 1,500 pages long. Gemini Nano, Google’s model designed to run on smartphones, has been expanded to include images in addition to text.
Gemma 2 and PaliGemma
The Gemini sister family of models, Gemma, is getting a major upgrade with the launch of Gemma 2 in June. The next generation of Gemma has been optimized for TPUs and GPUs and is launching at 27B parameters1. PaliGemma, Google’s first vision-language model, is also being added to the Gemma family of models.
Gemini for Google Workspace
With all of the Gemini updates, Google Workspace couldn’t be left without an AI upgrade of its own.
AI Revolutionizing Modern Warfare: A Deep Dive
Modern warfare is changing rapidly, and harnessing artificial intelligence is key to staying ahead of America’s adversaries. Software companies including Govini and Palantir are behind the production and modernization of today’s most high-tech weapon systems.
AI Companies at the Forefront
Both Govini and Palantir were at the second annual AI Expo for National Competitiveness in Washington to showcase their work to the nation’s top military brass. Fox News had an exclusive interview with Palantir’s CEO and co-founder Alex Karp, whose software is being used in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Race for AI Supremacy
“The way to prevent a war with China is to ramp up not just Palantir, but defense tech startups that produce software-defining weapons systems that scare the living F out of our adversaries,” Karp said. Karp emphasized either the U.S. will win the race for AI, or Russia and China will.
The Fear of AI in Warfare
Fear that AI could lead to killer robots and take humans out of the so-called “kill chain” has led to anxiety and threats of regulation that worries American innovators. But the U.S. has been ahead of its adversaries in artificial intelligence, and Karp said he wanted to keep it that way to deter any wrongdoing.
Cutting-Edge AI Technology in Action
Mixed Reality Command and Control goggles allow the war fighter to see the battlefield, available air assets, enemy targets and supply routes in 3D. Former intelligence analyst Shannon Clark, who has since led research and development for Palantir, said this targeting technology would have helped shorten the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, possibly leading to different outcomes.
The Speed of Decision-Making with AI
“It’s about speed. What was able to be done in days or weeks is now done in minutes,” Clark said. As drone swarms have become more prominent in modern warfare, knowing exactly what weapons the U.S. had in its stockpiles would be critical to defending U.S. interests across the globe.
